It's all about colour

We have been busy in the salon, Amazing lilac curls or you could even call it purple.
On naturally curly hair it looks very effective and would look just has good on straight hair.
In contrast we have a beautiful orange, red, flame which really suits her skin tone and is the colour of the season.

Where can I find a hairdressing academy to train with?

Choosing a hairdressing academy for your training entails much more than choosing one of the most well-known academies and passing the course. There are academies in most of the major cities, the question is, do they offer the specific training you need, and will your qualification from the academy be enough to get you into the jobs you ultimately want?

Before starting your research, there are some questions you need to have the answers to, so that when you are searching through the numerous hairdressing academies, you can quickly create a shortlist of the ones that are suitable for you:

1. What are legal requirements for working as a hairdresser in the area where you want to work?

2. Is there anything you want to specialise in e.g. cutting, perming etc? if so, you need to choose a course that includes additional training in that area. If you are not unsure what you want to focus on, or you just want to take a general training course, choose a good multi-disciplinary program as you can get advanced training in specific skills at a later date.

3. Are you prepared to re-locate, and if so, where to? Make a list of your preferred areas and search for academies in the towns and cities closest to them first.

4. How much are you prepared to spend on your training? The price of training courses can vary a lot, so if you have a maximum price you are willing, or able, to pay it is another good way of narrowing down your choices.

Once you have your hairdressing academy shortlist, you can start drilling down even further. You might have two or three that all seem very good, and it is hard for you to choose between them. A good academy will be happy to answer any questions you have about the training, and talking to someone on the phone or in person will allow you to ask if they have any job placement schemes, or ask about the size of the classes. Smaller classes will ensure a more personalised experience and more time for the trainers to dedicate to you.

Getting personal recommendations about a course is also a good idea, because you can talk to past students about the teaching methods, the quality of the training, and the success achieved thanks to the course. The next best thing is to look for testimonials on the website. If there are a lot of positive testimonials shown, they usually give a good indication of the style of teaching, the intensity and the result students get from the training. Often, a course is successful because the trainers are motivational and inspire their students, not just because of the techniques that are taught.

Whether you are a complete beginner starting on the hairdressing career path, or a hairstylist looking to learn the latest techniques, choosing a hairdressing academy to train with should be done only after carrying out proper research. By choosing a well-respected academy that gives you the accreditation you need, you can guarantee a successful future in hairdressing

Comic Relief Chelsee Enjoys A Nicky Oliver Makeover

Comic Relief Chelsee Enjoys A Nicky Oliver Makeover

Chelsee Before

Comic Relief charity challenge contestant and ex-Waterloo Road veteran Chelsee Healey called on Manchester celebrity hairdresser Nicky Oliver to give her hair a make-over following her Zambezi adventure with five other celebrities.

The Salford born actress, one of six top TV faces including Mel C, Dara O’Briain and Jack Dee,  who travelled 68 miles by paddle boat along the legendary African river to raise funds for Comic Relief, felt her hair desperately deserved a new look.

Nicky immediately suggested hair extensions from Wonderful Hair, the only extensions that can be bonded using ultra sound without the need for heat and hot glue, and then introduced her to stylist Laurel Warmington at his Oldham Street salon.

“This will give her hair the fullness, life and added body it needs,” explained Nicky. “It will put back the volume Chelsee wants.”

Although best known for her years as Janeece Bryant in Waterloo Road, Chelsee has had guest appearances in a string of TV programmes including Doctors and Hollyoaks. She was an instant hit in the 9th series of Strictly Come Dancing, in which she and partner Pasha Kovalev scored a perfect 40 out of 40 for their Paso Doble and ended the series as runners-up.

Although her Waterloo Road
career is now behind her, Chelsee is still very busy. She said she had thoroughly enjoyed her African adventure but still misses Strictly.
“I absolutely adored my time in “Strictly”, said 24 years old Chelsee, who lives in Eccles. “The music, the dancing, the costumes and the support of the audiences made it so special.”
What about her new hair? “I absolutely love it!” she said.

Seeking a hairdressing school...

What to look for when seeking a hairdressing school for hairdresser training?

Hair by Nicky Oliver
Make up by Sylvia Oliver

In these difficult days of austerity, redundancy, unemployment and cut-backs, more people than ever are looking for new careers, especially in hairdressing, according to celebrity hairdresser Nicky Oliver.

“I am being approached not only by people who have been forced in to making a decision about their careers because of circumstances beyond their control, but also by people who have made the decision that now is the time to follow their dream,” said Nicky from his vibrant Manchester hair salon and training academy in the trendy Northern Quarter of the city.

If you are considering becoming a hairdresser, you will need to complete a training course before you look for a job,” explained Nicky. “But the good news is that if you have no qualifications and you lack hairdressing experience, this is not a barrier to your success.
There is a hair dressing course to suit all levels of experience, from NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing courses for beginners to Continuing Professional Development courses for experienced hairdressers.

Those without hairdressing experience and qualifications, can enrol on a beginner’s hairdressing course, which is otherwise known as an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing,” added the award-winning stylist.

This course will introduce you to basic hairdressing skills through a combination of both practical and theoretical work,” explained Nicky. “You will learn about every aspect of hairdressing, from shampooing and conditioning hair to basic cutting and colouring, customer service skills and health and safety laws.

Class sizes are usually small to help you to receive the personal tuition that you require and anyone, of any age, can take an NVQ 2 in Hairdressing.”

Don't ever think that it is too late to pursue your dream career,” added Nicky. “Hairdressing allows you to be creative whilst interacting with clients and boosting people's self-esteem. But, while your age and experience may be irrelevant, you will need an abundance of enthusiasm and an interest in hairdressing to successfully complete the course.

Although holders of the NVQ 2 could go on to find  jobs in a hair salon, work on a cruise ship, open their own hair salon or work as a self-employed hairstylist, you can choose to further advance your skills, and enrol on an NVQ Level 3 or a professional development course, explained Nicky.

“The NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing course will teach you more advanced techniques, enabling you to take your hairdressing to a higher level,” added Nicky. “You will learn advanced colouring and cutting, advanced basic and creative hair-up techniques, advanced colour correction, advanced men’s hair and more.
As with your Level 2 work, your class sizes will usually be small to ensure that you receive the correct amount of individual training.
“And when you have qualified with an NVQ 2 or NVQ3, you can enrol on Professional Development courses that will help you to improve your confidence and update your skills. Professional Development hair dressing courses tend to cover the latest fashion cutting and colouring techniques. You can take these courses whether you have been working in the hairdressing industry for a few months or for several decades.

Qualifications needed

What Qualifications Are Required To Go On Hair Dressing Courses?

If you are considering becoming a hairdresser, you will need to complete a training course before you look for jobs. If you lack hairdressing experience, this is not a barrier to your success. There are hair dressing courses to suit all levels of experience, from NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing courses for beginners to continuing professional development courses for experienced hairdressers.

NVQ Level 2
If you have no hairdressing experience and no qualifications, you can enrol on a beginner’s hairdressing course, which is otherwise known as an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing. This course will introduce you to basic hairdressing skills through a combination of both practical and theoretical work. You will learn about every aspect of hairdressing, from shampooing and conditioning hair to basic cutting and colouring, customer service skills and health and safety laws. Class sizes are usually small to help you to receive the personal tuition that you require. Anyone of any age can take an NVQ 2 in Hairdressing. While your age and experience may be irrelevant, you will need an abundance of enthusiasm and an interested in hairdressing to successfully complete the course. Once you have completed your NVQ 2, you can go on to find a job in a hair salon, open your own hair salon or work as a self-employed hairstylist. If, however, you would like to advance your skills, you can enrol on an NVQ Level 3 or a professional development course.

NVQ Level 3Once you have gained your NVQ Level 2, you can enrol on an NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing course. This course will be a step up from your NVQ Level 2 work and will teach you more advanced techniques, enabling you to take your hairdressing to a higher level. You will learn advanced colouring and cutting, advanced basic and creative hair-up techniques, advanced colour correction, advanced men’s hair and more. As with your Level 2 work, your class sizes will usually be small to ensure that you receive the correct amount of individual training. Once you have completed your NVQ 3, you can find a job in a hair salon, open your own hair salon or work as a self-employed hairstylist.

Professional Development
Once you have qualified with an NVQ 2 or 3, you will be able to enrol on professional development courses that will help you to improve your confidence and update your skills. Professional development hair dressing courses tend to cover the latest fashion cutting and colouring techniques. You can take these courses whether you have been working in the hairdressing industry for a few months or for several decades.

STILL KEEPING TO YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS?

So how are your New Year Resolutions going?   Are you still sticking to that strict diet, madly cutting calories and trying to exist on fat-free yoghurt and diet shakes?

Yes?!

Well please spare a thought for your hair. Healthy hair comes with a healthy body and a really good diet is so important when it comes to looking after your hair.

Like any other part of your body, your hair requires the right balance of nutrients and vitamins and anything that upsets that balance will eventually affect the look and  health of your hair.

Crash dieting is definitely bad news! It interferes with the hair cycle by affecting the supply of vitamins and minerals that we need to function properly.

Reducing the amount you eat to lose excess pounds is one thing, but any drastic change in your diet that restricts your input of crucial vitamins and nutrient will definitely give you bad hair days.

So don’t beat yourself up about trying to lose weight! Take dieting slowly, try and lose a couple of pounds a week and do allow yourself a little treat occasionally. Your hair and body will say a huge thank you!

Finally, ring up your stylist and book in for a treatment and a trim.  A deep, moisturizing treatment will leave you with gorgeous, shiny, conditioned hair and a trim will get rid of dry split-ends.

And don’t forget, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Dull, dry, lifeless hair is definitely a romance killer! So, start looking after your hair right now and by February 14th your hair will be your crowning glory.

For a fantastic 2013 eat healthily, be kind to your hair and make you hair stylist your very best friend!!
