Qualifications needed

What Qualifications Are Required To Go On Hair Dressing Courses?

If you are considering becoming a hairdresser, you will need to complete a training course before you look for jobs. If you lack hairdressing experience, this is not a barrier to your success. There are hair dressing courses to suit all levels of experience, from NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing courses for beginners to continuing professional development courses for experienced hairdressers.

NVQ Level 2
If you have no hairdressing experience and no qualifications, you can enrol on a beginner’s hairdressing course, which is otherwise known as an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing. This course will introduce you to basic hairdressing skills through a combination of both practical and theoretical work. You will learn about every aspect of hairdressing, from shampooing and conditioning hair to basic cutting and colouring, customer service skills and health and safety laws. Class sizes are usually small to help you to receive the personal tuition that you require. Anyone of any age can take an NVQ 2 in Hairdressing. While your age and experience may be irrelevant, you will need an abundance of enthusiasm and an interested in hairdressing to successfully complete the course. Once you have completed your NVQ 2, you can go on to find a job in a hair salon, open your own hair salon or work as a self-employed hairstylist. If, however, you would like to advance your skills, you can enrol on an NVQ Level 3 or a professional development course.

NVQ Level 3Once you have gained your NVQ Level 2, you can enrol on an NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing course. This course will be a step up from your NVQ Level 2 work and will teach you more advanced techniques, enabling you to take your hairdressing to a higher level. You will learn advanced colouring and cutting, advanced basic and creative hair-up techniques, advanced colour correction, advanced men’s hair and more. As with your Level 2 work, your class sizes will usually be small to ensure that you receive the correct amount of individual training. Once you have completed your NVQ 3, you can find a job in a hair salon, open your own hair salon or work as a self-employed hairstylist.

Professional Development
Once you have qualified with an NVQ 2 or 3, you will be able to enrol on professional development courses that will help you to improve your confidence and update your skills. Professional development hair dressing courses tend to cover the latest fashion cutting and colouring techniques. You can take these courses whether you have been working in the hairdressing industry for a few months or for several decades.

STILL KEEPING TO YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS?

So how are your New Year Resolutions going?   Are you still sticking to that strict diet, madly cutting calories and trying to exist on fat-free yoghurt and diet shakes?

Yes?!

Well please spare a thought for your hair. Healthy hair comes with a healthy body and a really good diet is so important when it comes to looking after your hair.

Like any other part of your body, your hair requires the right balance of nutrients and vitamins and anything that upsets that balance will eventually affect the look and  health of your hair.

Crash dieting is definitely bad news! It interferes with the hair cycle by affecting the supply of vitamins and minerals that we need to function properly.

Reducing the amount you eat to lose excess pounds is one thing, but any drastic change in your diet that restricts your input of crucial vitamins and nutrient will definitely give you bad hair days.

So don’t beat yourself up about trying to lose weight! Take dieting slowly, try and lose a couple of pounds a week and do allow yourself a little treat occasionally. Your hair and body will say a huge thank you!

Finally, ring up your stylist and book in for a treatment and a trim.  A deep, moisturizing treatment will leave you with gorgeous, shiny, conditioned hair and a trim will get rid of dry split-ends.

And don’t forget, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Dull, dry, lifeless hair is definitely a romance killer! So, start looking after your hair right now and by February 14th your hair will be your crowning glory.

For a fantastic 2013 eat healthily, be kind to your hair and make you hair stylist your very best friend!!

More celebrities than ever are opting for hair extensions to complete their looks because of rapidly advancing technology, said celebrity stylist Nicky Oliver

“And who can blame them for refusing to divulge the fact that their amazing, naturally thick and healthy looking hair is not entirely natural,” added the hairdressing guru.

Nicky revealed that clients at his salon in the fashionable Northern Quarter of city centre Manchester, were now able to take advantage of the new Cold Fusion Technology systems used by hair extension experts Wonderful Hair.

“The company is committed to offering the most innovative technology in the field of hair extensions, which is why we have teamed up with them,” added Nicky.

“Cold Fusion uses ultrasound to attach hair extensions which eliminates the use of heat and hot glue, and thereby reducing the risk of damage to the hair.

“We use 100 per quality human hair extensions so this form of protection means our stylists can ensure your extensions will remain secure and comfortable.

“Furthermore, Cold Fusion is a very quick and very safe method of applying extensions and it would take one of our fully trained stylists just 90 minutes to apply a full head of extensions.

“With regular maintenance appointments, our extensions can last anywhere between four and six months.”

So many Celebrities use Hair Extensions, like Kimberley Walsh, Katie Price and Jennifer Ellison, but often our Celebrity clients don’t like to divulge they are wearing extensions.

And why would they, when with the right choice of extensions applied correctly, they look like they have amazing naturally thick, shiny, healthy looking hair!
Would you like perfect ‘celebrity’ hair? Then read on
……….
NICKY OLIVER HAIRDRESSING is committed to offering the latest, most innovative technology in the field of hair extension applications which is why we have teamed up with WONDERFUL HAIR, a leader in providing Premium Hair Extensions.

After an initial consultation with one of our team, who are fully trained in the REVOLUTIONARY COLD FUSION TECHNOLOGY SYSTEM, we will recommend the most suitable hair type and length for your individual needs.

WHAT IS COLD FUSION TECHNOLOGY SYSTEM & WHY DO WE USE IT?
  • Developed at the Wonderful Hair headquarters in Italy, the Wonderful Hair Revolutionary Cold Fusion System is used for applying the Wonderful Hair Extensions.

  • Our 100% high quality human hair extensions are designed to be applied as single bonds, which mean partial as well as full placements can be made easily, efficiently and accurately. This enables your technician to create unique and individual styles for you that remain secure and comfortable; placing Cold Fusion hair extension system at the forefront of the UK industry.

  • Using ultrasound technology Cold Fusion is designed to reduce the risk of damage to your natural hair by virtually eliminating the use of two important elements – Heat and Hot Glue.

  • Utilises a patented hand held applicator that is designed to apply and mould the small flat keratin bond to the hair.

  • On the top of each lock of hair, we attach a thin sheet of keratin. As keratin is a natural component of human hair, it ensures that the hair extension blends perfectly with the natural hair, improving the application process by making it simple yet precise.

  • Utilising a ‘V’ shaped Keratin bond, your hair is placed within the bond recess, and sandwiched between the keratin compound, resulting in a flat bond which remains virtually undetectable to sight and touch. There is no mixing of the hair extensions and your natural hair, so removal of the extensions is clean and simple.

  • Is a very quick, yet safe method for Applying Hair Extensions – only 90 Minutes for a Full Head of Extensions applied by one of Nicky Oliver’s trained stylists.

  • Extensions can last 4-6 months with regular maintenance appointments.

Hope you had a fantastic summer!

For many Autumn is the start of a not-so-beautiful relationship with your hair. The cold, damp weather can make your mane unruly and hard to control, and chilly winds knock the ‘oomph’ out of any style in seconds flat. Well, this Autumn/Winter 2012 is a different story.
Stylists and hairdressers have got wise to Mother Nature’s annoying ways and reinvented a classic look; the ponytail, or as the fashion-conscious now call it, ‘the pony.’
This new take on an old favourite, but arguably dated look, is to throw away the scrunchies (something you should’ve done in 1999!) and use sleek bands and pins instead to create clean lines and a simple shape. Ponytails are styled at the nape of the neck and hair is wrapped around a plain band to disguise it.  The styling should be minimal and finished with a glossy shine to keep the look right on trend.
Nicky Oliver Shine Serum £12.00 is non-greasy and perfect to control and add shine to dry, coloured or frizzy hair. Or try the new Nicky Oliver Sculpt Lotion £12 to get excellent control, add definition and masses of shine.
Other variations to fight the elements include a sixties style, achieved by blow drying from below to add volume and then gently backcombing the hair at the nape of the neck. Finish with a black bow rather than a band, to continue the sixties vibe.
‘Messy’ is still big with a deep-sided parting and loose messy waves. Use Nicky Oliver Matt Putty Texture Paste £10 to create definition. Or go one step further and choose scruffy plaits.  They will be everywhere this autumn and ideal for the girl who pretends she ‘couldn’t care less’ and hasn’t really tried!
And what do ‘those in the know’ have in store for us next Spring? The word is out that sleek and straight will be the way to go.   Plaits will still be big, twisted around the head and in to buns at the base of the neck whilst the androgynous look grows.
And for men? Anything goes just so long as it’s slicked back!
