For many Autumn is the start of a not-so-beautiful relationship with your hair. The cold, damp weather can make your mane unruly and hard to control, and chilly winds knock the ‘oomph’ out of any style in seconds flat. Well, this Autumn/Winter 2012 is a different story.
Stylists and hairdressers have got wise to Mother Nature’s annoying ways and reinvented a classic look; the ponytail, or as the fashion-conscious now call it, ‘the pony.’
This new take on an old favourite, but arguably dated look, is to throw away the scrunchies (something you should’ve done in 1999!) and use sleek bands and pins instead to create clean lines and a simple shape. Ponytails are styled at the nape of the neck and hair is wrapped around a plain band to disguise it. The styling should be minimal and finished with a glossy shine to keep the look right on trend.
Nicky Oliver Shine Serum £12.00 is non-greasy and perfect to control and add shine to dry, coloured or frizzy hair. Or try the new Nicky Oliver Sculpt Lotion £12 to get excellent control, add definition and masses of shine.
Other variations to fight the elements include a sixties style, achieved by blow drying from below to add volume and then gently backcombing the hair at the nape of the neck. Finish with a black bow rather than a band, to continue the sixties vibe.
‘Messy’ is still big with a deep-sided parting and loose messy waves. Use Nicky Oliver Matt Putty Texture Paste £10 to create definition. Or go one step further and choose scruffy plaits. They will be everywhere this autumn and ideal for the girl who pretends she ‘couldn’t care less’ and hasn’t really tried!
And what do ‘those in the know’ have in store for us next Spring? The word is out that sleek and straight will be the way to go. Plaits will still be big, twisted around the head and in to buns at the base of the neck whilst the androgynous look grows.
And for men? Anything goes just so long as it’s slicked back!
